I should mention that it's best to use the same resolution textures you paint with as the terrtex tile you are painting on. Otherwise the painted stuff will be larger or smaller than you expect!

Hi Steve,

Fantastic work and you seem to be the resident expert on high resolution Terrtex. You inspired me to do some experiments on my route projects - only to 2048. TSRE seems unable to edit or use DDS as tiles even though they work fine in ORTS. If you remove all ACE files from the Terrtex directory - leaving only DDS the tiles are all black in TSRE - even on small test routes with a single terrain.ace converted to terrain.dds. A compressed DDS DXT1 seems much smaller than a compressed ACE like 3MB vs 8MB for 2048 textures. While the DDS is smaller the quality of the texture seems better than the ACE. I have to look more into this but the 2048 textures have serious Moire even after running through ReMipIt - perhaps the program can’t handle 2048. I still need to check if the textures have MipMaps after processing. There seems no way to ditch the ACE at the present time due to TSRE. I’m trying to figure out how TrainSimulations does their DDS only routes. Perhaps they do all ACE and simply convert to DDS for packaging. Great topic your Terrtex work is outstanding.

Regards,
Scott

Hi Steve,

Correction -
  • It's 2.66MB for a DXT1 compressed - no alpha - mipmap - 2048 DDS
  • It's 11.0MB for a compressed - no alpha - mipmap - 2048 ACE

My 2048 Terrain Examples:
Attached File  Terrain2048.zip (12.99MB)
Number of downloads: 189

Regards,
Scott

Here's a bit of an update, I've been scattering rocks quite a bit at the base of the cliffs. Every terrtex patch within a large circle is a 4096, so far performance hasn't changed, although both TSRE and OR take somewhat longer to load.

Simply wonderful! Are ye going to paint right of way under the tracks, Steve? That is all that's missing from this scene, it seems to me.

It's certainly fun putting this together! I have put in some, but need to tweak the texture some more to match the ballast. Who knows what else I'll add as I work up the tracks (and backtrack as I think of something else to overload my graphic card!).

I dumped and spread some ballast, just for you Tim! Amazingly, the wildflowers bloomed while I was doing the work.

I had an interesting experience yesterday :o I was looking at some screenshots of my recent work, a beautiful late spring day...

Attached Image: summer in the woods.jpg

When right before my eyes, it chilled and got a dusting of the 1st snow of the season!

Attached Image: 1st snow on the gc-d.jpg

The reality is, I wish I could create that snow scene, in a sense, I did...

The magic of Photoshop. I was checking out the image in black and white with the filters that imitate various photographic filters. When I looked at the "infrared" filter, I was shocked by the scene! I may use a different image done this way for a Christmas card.

Well, one of routes that I have, uses such *.env-files, which make environment almost grayscale, when dense clouds hide the sun completely.
Maybe, that's worth to try them?

You must have weather like we do here...winter is never truly over until late May.

That is a really cool shot, though. It could be a dusting of snow, or a really heavy frost. Either way, it's going to be a bit chilly
