I have read in several forums, conflicting information on whether or not .tit and .rit files are used, or even needed, in Open Rails. Can someone please clarify this.

David, forget about .rit and .tit files in OR. They aren't used and OR ignores them. You cah write a Shakespeare's lyric in it, and OR won't complain.

Thanks. Am I then correct in assuming that they are also not needed for running route editor and activity editor in TSRE?

Somewhat off-topic, but as many people still use MSTS Activity Editor and not TSRE, would .rit and .tit files still be needed to allow this?

As an additional question to David's, what is the purpose in MSTS of the .rit and .tit files? They seem to me just to repeat information contained in the .rdb and .tdb files.

Martin

Sorry, I'm not able to answer about TSRE and MSTS. Maybe an answer can be obtained by asking in the related forums.

Carlo, if TSRE writes to the .tit file what about this idea: rename <route_name>.tit to <activity_name>.tit and move the copy over to \Activities. There the activity writer deletes the stuff that isn't actually relevant to that specific activity. It could be a real boon for industrial switching.

And of course if no deletions are done the result is the same as it is now.

I have found the following message from Goku on the TSRE forums.

Quote

Tit is made by TSRE only for MSTS backward compatibility.

In the tdb and rdb file there are basically two lists of track objects each. The first one is the TrackNode list for vector objects like tracks or roads. The second one is the list of TrackItems that have been placed on the tracks or roads, such as all platforms, platform names, signals, level crossings or carspawner etc. that have been placed in the route.

The rit and tit files
each contain only this second list of TrackItems, respectively as a clone from the tdb and the rdb. I think that MSTS creates the tit and rit for faster data access, perhaps to ensure a smoother simmulation process, or even as a backup.

Anyway, I just did some tests with a small test route consisting only of a straight rail with a level crossing.

The tit and the rit were created by MSTS RouteEditor only, not by MSTS ActivityEditor or the MSTS main program. If I delete the two files and then create an activity with the MSTS ActivityEditor and run it in the MSTS main program, I can do that without any problems.

So it seems to me that the MSTS never miss the two files tit and rit but creates them again an again when saving a route with the MSTS RouteEditor.

Thanks for the advice on .tit and .rit files. Is there any more comment?
