Don't have a date yet for our release of the next Stable Version of Open Rails, but we're getting closer.

Here is a draft of the video which will accompany the release. It will be published to YouTube when Version 1.4 is actually released.

Please take a look and let me know if there anything seriously wrong or missing?

You said "closer"?

Yes. The switch to Monogame has always been the major item and that's available now in the Testing version.

It's a long time since the last Stable Version was released, and much has changed so there's been lots of extra work in making a release.

So far, the team has:

- updated languages
- prepared updated pages for the website
- revised the Installer to suit the move from .NET 3.5 to .NET 4.7.2 and from XNA to Monogame
- revised the Git workflow to support Release Candidates
- created a video to highlight changes

There's still a bit more to do on the Git workflow to post files to the correct places.
We will also go through a brief stage where we fix bugs but not add any new features.

(The Release Candidates mechanism means that bug fixes will both apply to the release and to the development branch, but new features only get added to the development branch. We not managed that before.)

The aim from now on is to release twice a year.

Impressive. Thanks for replying.
Looks good to be the part of said interview.
If so, we can talk about details through PM.

I appreciate the twice-yearly update goal. Not everyone is comfortable with sorting out the various testing and unstable releases, so they'll go with the "safe" option of the stable release. (Especially since updates often invalidate save files.) But if the stable version gets stale, it will seem like the project isn't moving forward.

Even if the updates are fairly minor/incremental in nature, it will carry the impression of active development into the public view more effectively which is good for the public image of the project.

Exactly so.

We expect that the changes to the release process that we need this time around will not be needed next time, so a new release should not be such a big task.

Yes, updates do often invalidate Save files.

But it's way better than the previous approach which _always_ invalidated Save files so I'm quite pleased with that improvement. :-)

We discussed a scheme that never invalidated Save files but it would be difficult to maintain and a source of bugs.

Chris, anyway you slice the cheese...this Open Source project is a marvel...KUDOS...really! The whole development team is to be congratulated on their collective BRILLIANT efforts...it's such a robust simulator. I know getting started in it must be daunting for new folks...(glad I started in 2013 and been using it most every day since ) but the learning curve is well worth the time and effort. Thanks for new OR V1.4!

Switch to MonoGame is such a great progress to improve the performance.

Good news,
Are graphics performances improved and memory consumption aligned with MonoGame one's ?
Congrats to contributors ;)

Dumb question of the day: Is monogame now part of the unstable release or does I need to hunt it down separately?
