If you don't have an antivirus installed Windows uses Defender by default.

Ahhh, thanks, I've always used other antivirus programs.

I have sorted the problem I think.

I have assumed there are in fact no viruses in the ace files. Who would bother to infect obscure and hardly known file types. Windows Defender quarantined the files and I have recovered them. So far no problems. Defender scan shows no viruses or threats. I have told Defender not to scan ace files.

Who knows why the problem occurred though.

It's because .ace used to be the file type of an executable, like .7z and .zip. As such, if the anti-virus program recognises the signature of a virus within that file it treats it as such and quarantines and deletes it, as in your case or just deletes it, as in my case, depending on how the AV is set up. I doubt if it'd be every .ace file but just those containing a recognised bit-pattern.

Cheers,
Ged

Interesting thing happened the other day. I've been using Corel since I've had a computer, so about 22 years. Corel came with 190 fonts and I've added to them over the years. When I had to change versions of Corel because of Windows 7, that dropped to 94 fonts and I had to go and download more from the net. Six of the fonts I used came with Windows 7. Last month when I made the Abitibi logo to use on the S-4 and Shay was the one and only time I used one of the fonts from this company... I actually only used the A. Yesterday when I was in Corel making the texture for the tender sides I was going through my fonts and found all six fonts by this one company... which all came with Corel 6X had changed to "Not for Commercial Use", so I could no longer use them.

Years ago, Microsoft bought a 50% stake in Corel. They changed all fonts from 8 bit to 16 bit for no reason (they are all black and white drawings). The reason they did this was to stop people from using Corel 10 and force them to buy a newer version that sucked.

Paul :-)

I have a new w10 laptop and installed OR on it just to have somewher to run trains when away from home, I added .ace files as an exception in wndows defender just now just to be safe. Hopefully this won't happen with anything else in future!
