I had a test. I modified the OR code to increase the Y position of the FreightAnim by 3 meters. This is the result:
Attached Image: UPFreightAnim.jpg
The FreightAnim is there. So probably it has polygons which are too near to the ones of the main shape, and therefore they are hidden behind the main shape. I wouldn't know how to solve it, if not by widening a bit the FreightAnim shape. Maybe this can be tried with ShapeFileManager, but the result could be a mess.

I used ShapeFileManager and multiplied the X-Axis by the value 1.001. Below the result

Here the modified FreightAnim shape file for testing
Attached File  UP_Notch_Accesseries.zip (28.76K)
Number of downloads: 271
If the result is considered satisfying, it will be easy for anyone to modify also the FreightAnim shapes of the other locomotives in the pack.

The freight anim is loading OK in OR which is why there is no error in the OpenRailsLog.txt file

On examining in Shape File Viewer, I suspected that the faces in the 'UP_Notch_Accesseries.s' freight anim may be to close to the faces in the loco body and therefore are not being drawn by the OR graphics engine. Having co-plainer faces or faces in close proximity can cause a shimmering effect called 'Z fighting' (google it).

To confirm I uncompressed the UP_Notch_Accesseries.s file in Shape File Manager and shifted it 4 metres in the + Y axis to move it up 4 metres.

Now in Open Rails I could see the freight anim 4 metres above the loco body.

You may want to report this to the OR team to see if it can be resolved.

A work around is to scale the 'UP_Notch_Accesseries.s' freight anim file in Shape File Manager. I used 1.0005 to get in the ball park. Fine tune the scaling to your satisfaction.

Cheers,

Marek.

Quite interesting that we followed exactly the same procedure :)

Unfortunately, I have come across a ns loco with the same problem, It is shareware and the loco is NS_sd70M_2581. Can you help me with this one also? The file looks like it has 2 Freight Animations. It is in a pack named ns70m_s4pk.zip in train sim.

A note to model builders: as a rule, I won't place decals any closer than a quarter inch off the surface. Any closer and you risk Z-fighting issues like you see here.

Hi AJ,
As these locos are intended for MSTS, each only has one FreightAnimation entry!

The same procedure as described previously should be used for these locos, but in case it's not clear, this is it, using Shape File Manager :

1. Decompress shape file
2. Select 'Scale'
3. Remove tick from the 'Scale same in all directions' box
4. Enter 1.001 in the 'Scale Factor X' box (1.0005 also works satisfactorily)
5. Set 'Scale Factor Y' and 'Scale Factor Z' to 1.0
6. Remove ticks from 'Adjust bounding box in .sd file' and 'Adjust dimensions found in END/WAG file' boxes.
7. Click the 'OK' button.
8. Compress the shape file.

In the loco's folder, SFM will have backed up the original shape file, in its uncompressed state, as NS_Standard_Acceseries.s.PreScale

Cheers,
Ged

THANKS Ged, for explaining how to correct this. It is better to explain how it is done instead of correcting the problem for someone otherwise you can never learn.

Thanks again
AJ
