Nifty idea, Chris!

I'm just slightly concerned that the large number of question mark icons might seem overwhelming to new users, and distracting to experienced ones. What if they were hidden by default unless activated by a dedicated "Help" button?

Is there a way to make the info button appear for a given option when the mouse cursor is over said option?

Try doing it like Wikipedia does.
Underline the relevant text then when the cursor hovers over it it pops up a small window with a basic information and when the information window is clicked it goes to the web page.

It would nice to have a Reset to OR-Default-Options
and
a Save and Recall of User selected Options

You can already do both "the dirty way".

  • Open your preferred text editor and within it, a new, empty text file.
  • Save that completely empty file to your ORTS installation folder as "OpenRails.ini" (upper / lower case shouldn't matter).
  • Then run ORTS and will automatically save the standard configuration to this file. If you then make any changes in the ORTS settings menu, those changes will no longer go to the registry, but to the OpenRails.ini file.
  • You can now go and make a copy of the file that you could name "OpenRails_RouteABC.ini", for example. You can then go and change your settings to suit route XYZ, and make another copy called "OpenRails_RouteXYZ.ini".Now, before you run route ABC (or XYZ), you'd simply have to delete OpenRails.ini, make a copy of OpenRails_RouteABC.ini (or ...XYZ.ini) and rename that copy to OpenRails.ini (IE, you're replacing the per-existing OpenRails.ini with a copy of your route-specific one).

It works the same as many models that allow you to switch paint schemes :good:

Of course, if you know how to do it, you could also come up with batch files to help you manage the settings files ;)

Cheers, Markus

I think hiding them by default rather defeats the aim of letting users know that help is just a click away.

But you are quite right that they are rather prominent. It might be better to have them in grey and showing colour whenever the mouse moves over them.

I've changed the operation, so the info icons are now subdued, but show up more boldly when you mouse over the control (see mouse pointer above).

This is now available as part of the Unstable version.

Is that better? Is it worth applying to the other tabs in the Options form?

I like this...very handy. I think it's worth applying to other tabs. Makes it easier to access all the information in the manual..it would be beneficial if more people would use the manual.

Good idea,
but if I load down the "latest release", from here:
https://open-rails.r...s.io/en/latest/
I get one from 22.9.2020,

These on-line manuals should be automatically updated. There is a Stable version (i.e. 1.3.1), a Testing version and an Unstable version.

We hadn't noticed that these updates failed from September onwards. James Ross has taken a look, found the inevitable change in the tools we use that broke the automation and fixed it.

The Unstable version now shows the updated Manual and the Testing manual should be updated on Friday with the next Testing version.

Thanks again for spotting this.
