It's February 9, 1937 K-36's #480 & #486 departs Alamosa at 5:40 AM with 38 loads, 10 empties, & 2 cabooses (one for train crew, & 1 for deadhead crew).

Crew: Conductor Curtis, Engineer Kellogg for the 480, & Engineer Holly for the 486, along with dead head crew Conductor Moore, & Engineers Vinton & J Johnson.

There's also a rotary clearing the line that left hours prior.

Makes me think of Otto Perry. He was in his 40's when he photographed trains

At 8 AM, conductor Curtis and crew were released & became deadhead heading west while Conductor Moore & the engine crew went on duty. After 1 hour 30 minutes switching, coaling & watering the engines, cutting in the helper, & letting the westbound San Juan by, the freight departs Antonito at 8:50 AM with 38 loads, 8 empties & 2 cabooses; this train runs behind the rotary & the San Juan.

As the train climbs the hill, it catches up to the rotary train & the San Juan, & the freight follows the 2 trains...

... until MP 329.6 (1 mile from Cumbres), when RG 164 (a 40 foot reefer built in 1926 which was loaded with meat for Durango) derails because the meat (quarters of beef) were hung from one side, & the meat was loaded on one side. It took the train crew 1 hour 30 minutes to re rail the car...

... & another hour to get the train into Cumbres after the car was taken to the wye because the 164 has a broken train line (the time is now 7:30 PM).
