I downloaded and installed this locomotive today, but when I run it in ORTS, I get an error code. In the log, the error is:

Warning: Cannot parse the constant number NumNotches in C:\Open Rails\trains\trainset\h-4-b1520\1520.eng:line 319

Warning: "(" not found - instead found ")" in C:\Open Rails\trains\trainset\h-4-b1520\1520.eng:line 319

Warning: Expected end of file in C:\Open Rails\trains\trainset\h-4-b1520\1520.eng:line 322

Error: System.IO.FileLoadException: C:\Open Rails\trains\trainset\h-4-b1520\1520.eng ---> Orts.Parsers.Msts.STFException: "(" not found - instead found ")" in C:\Open Rails\trains\trainset\h-4-b1520\1520.eng:line 320

I've uploaded the log file as well.

Could someone give me help in understanding and fixing the problem?

Most probably you have a parentsis missing somewhere on the 1520.eng

Can you post that file?

Or better yet.. can you point to where you downloaded the locomotive?

Do you have your TRAINS folder inside your OR installation? This isn't the source of your problem (it probably is a missing or backwards bracket), but it still shouldn't be there

I downloaded the file from the file library here. I used ConText editor to check all the parentheses and didn't notice any errors, which doesn't mean there aren't any.

I've uploaded the .eng file.

I do have it in my OR installation. I don't have MSTS installed, so am unsure of where else to install my addons. I checked the .eng file using ConText and did not notice any missing parentheses.

If you substitute # for 'Comment' on line 377 it will probably make it work.

Use # for comments if the parentsis stay in the same line. The forward bracket is on line 377 but the closing bracket is on line 389 and it was making confusion. Use # for coments that stay in the same line and use comment for comments that span multiple lines.

Thanks for that Aldarion. I made that change, but still no joy. Also move the content out of the Open Rails install directory.

I noticed that the engine file is from the Illinois Central 382 in the file library here. I'm going to download that and compare files.

This is just a suggestion.
Make a new folder in your C drive, ie C:\ 1MSTS.
Move the Global, Routes, Sound and Trails folders from the Open Rails folder to the new 1MSTS folder.
It will keep your content from being damaged by an auto ORTS update. And it's easier to find.

A big thank you to every one that helped. I downloaded the Illinois Central 382 model and used the engine file from that (pretty much the same file: both from Dick Cowen's 4-6-0 model) and it worked. Not sure what the problem was.

I got some good advice on making ORTS run better on my system. Now have a new folder ORTrainSim which has all my content (outside of the Open Rails install) and the game is running much better. I really appreciate all the tips I got.

Here is the problem Line 319 is
Cutoff ( -0.85 0.85 0.025
There should be 4 sets of numbers. Probably the "0" got deleted.
Should be
Cutoff ( -0.85 0.85 0.025 0
