I've always wanted a \rain folder under \textures. I add a 20-25% opacity black layer to the art and the result is pretty effective. At present I use \snow instead as it is far easier to make a wet rain texture than any snow covered one. A wet boxcar texture, etc., would be pretty easy to make and I know it would look right. Any chance of adding \rain along with an appropriate \esd_alternative_texture() code?

Hi Dave,
I also had that idea. it should be not too difficult to add it.

When I think of rain effect I think everything goes darker in colour and hard surfaces (trains and scenery like paving stones and slate roofs) become shiny. When the rain stops the dark (and where appropriate shiny) remains and only fades away slowly as things dry out.

I know it can be done by using a .bat file and separate .ace files. Keith Fair and Geoffrey Fair, created something close with their MSTS Sea View Freight Line GP35 Effects mod to their MSTS Sea View Freight Line GP35 Locomotive. The bat files can be found at TS by searching for svgp35fx.zip

Slightly off topic I know, but dare I say again that we should have better particle physics for water. Steam and smoke particles rise and drift. So do water particles in OR - if you overfill the tender. Water particle physics would surely be needed for more realistic rain and could also add to scenic effects with small streams and water falls running down hill.

On request, a system for displaying rainwater drops on the windscreens of 2D and 3D cabins...

In the idea the change of color would be determined by the rate of precipitation with something along the lines of the inverse for when the rain stops. I use a 20-25% opacity black layer for my rain textures; the same could be done by the OR program with the degree of opacity changing over time. That however is plausibly more complex and therefore less likely to occur given how few people contribute work tot he program these days. But it would be visually impressive if it could be done.

well, this has caught my attention. Hmmmm.

My experience of rain on freight cars is there is not just a uniform change in character, but the addition of streaks of runnoff.

The only thing than would be much harder is when you've got freight cars that started off their trip in Vermont or Montana or something and end up arriving with piles of snow on top in an environment with no snow on the ground. That is always eye catching.

Chris.
The effect of snow pilling can be achieved with a freight anim 'inverted' to "load" with time, in the same sense that coal is 'unloaded' from a tender?

In my country's route that I'm building, as we dont have snow in all territory i already have some textures for the north regions that will display snow in winter and on the southern textures they will just be darker than the regular textures...
