The pantograph sound sounds when the pantograph is moved, whether the particular locos has a pantograph or is third-rail or similar. Is there any way to not have this sound play?

The easiest way is to change the stream or the .WAV in the .SMS file (Sounds), such as discrete triggers 45-46 (Panto-1) or 66-67 (Panto-2).

(Sound info, see also "https://www.coalstonewcastle.com.au/physics/sounds/")

Thanks, but what .wav or .sms file would that be?

Each locomotive has a * .ENG file. It contains two lines of "SOUND (xxxx)" that refer to a * .SMS file. (generally in the directory /SOUND in your locomotive directory, two files for cab (* cab.SMS) and external (* eng.SMS).
This contains the discrete triggers (45 and 46 as an example) that refer to a particular * .WAV file. You hear this sound when you activate or deactivate the PANTO.
