I had this problem with the version of Sphynx that I have installed on my computer, I managed to generate the manual by making a copy of the index.rst file and renaming it contents.rst. But with the portable version published here and running Open Cmd.bat it is not necessary to have the contents.rst file to generate the manual.

Thank you, I have only to find out where I unpacked Ryan's pack...

Wherever you have Ryan's package, put all the .rst files and associated "images" directory, run Open Cmd.bat, type "make html" or "make pdf" as you wish to generate the manual

That's OK now for the html version, thank you. The "make pdf" command doesn't work here though: it writes "Builder name not registered or available through entry point".
"make latexpdf" doesn't work either ("the package latexmk could not be installed"). I attach the logfile

The first time I ran "make pdf" the firewall asked me for internet access and I installed a latex package through the cmd window. Then I generate the latex file and later the pdf file.
From what I see in the attached log file, you have not been able to connect to the server (it seems that it has not responded and it sends you a 404 error)
Try again later and hopefully the server where the package to download is working.

The preferred way would be to "cd" into the directory with the manual source code, so that you don't have to move those files around. But yes, that works too, particularly if you're not concerned with making changes.

Yes, it would be preferable, to "cd" to the directory with the files, but when you have the "MsDos" commands rusty, you take other solutions.

When I'm working on the manual, I make a PDF as the final step to check everything is OK. But while I am making changes to the RST files, I check the edits using the Visual Studio Code editor. It's possible to render an HTML page just for the current RST file with a single keystroke and the page pops up in another tab in the editor.

Saves me a whole lot of time, so let me know if you would like instructions.

Thanks Chris, I had this working when I was using Windows7, but now under W10 I don't get it working, so instructions are welcome.

I've just installed it on my new Win 10 desktop.
There's a list of what I did, though I don't think anything was specific to Win 10.

Good luck !
