This problem has suddenly appeared when running any MG version in Windows 7. It does not appear in any non-MG version
nor in any MG version in Windows 10. There have been no updates in Win 7 for quite a while.
I tried changing permissions for OpenRailsLog.txt but that did not help.
"A fatal error has occured and Open Rails cannot continue.
System.UnauthorisedAccessException: Access to the path C:/Users/Brian Hook/Desktop/OpenRailsLog.txt is denied."
Any ideas what is causing this?
Regards,
Brian.
The same message is on TrainSim.com, but I think ET is better.

OR does not get far enough to create a .txt log. Thats the problem.

Brian.

The difference for your issue is to change the following line in that post:
In the field next to that type in the path, or partial path to that users temp folder as recorded in the openrails.txt file e.g. AppData\Local\Temp\tmp
to be:
In the field next to that type in: openrailslog.txt
Then run Process Monitor and start Open Rails until you get the error.
Then stop Process Monitor and see if there are any other programs (like anti virus software) that are accessing the openrailslog.txt file or if the operating system is denying write permissions to that location.
Cheers,
Marek.

Since it has recently arrived, it may be due to a virus checker being updated and now interfering. Would you try with your virus checker(s) disabled (including Microsoft's Defender).
I am interested in this as I have recently had a user complain about something similar (System.IOException) for the log file. Although he got around it by turning off the logging, that is no way forward. I'm still waiting for details:OS version, Open Rails version, is it always or sometimes, does the route make a difference.
Marek's advice will show you what's actually happening.

Marek`s advice and your suggestion both pointed to the Antivirus software as being the culprit.
Indeed it was. I use AVG which has a protected folder option. One of these folders listed as protected was the Desktop.
After removing the folder protection the MG versions 62 and 68 both work perfectly.
Probably a recent update of AVG added the protection for this folder.
Thank you both and I hope this procedure will help fellow simmers with a similar error.
Best regards,
Brian.

Have a look on Trainsim.com, I have posted details of how to remove protected folders from AVG Antivirus.
Your antivirus programme may be the culprit causing the crashes.
If not, you will need to post far more details than in your original post so we can try to help you.

And already one of our devs has been hit by this change in AVG and has changed the settings to allow saving to Windows Desktop.
By the way, I remember seeing a config somewhere that allowed you to save the log file elsewhere and also under different filenames.
