EMD SD60 Demonstrators EMDX 1 and EMDX 2
By Parker Boots.
The SD60 was the first engine equipped with the EMD 710 prime mover, and were one of the earliest microprocessor-equipped locomotives. These units were an improvement over the problematic SD50, and helped rebuild EMD’s reputation, ensuring EMDs continued survival into the modern day. The SD60s are most suited to hauling freight trains, from intermodal trains to coal drags, and are almost as flexible as the locomotive they were intended to replace, the SD40-2.
EMDX 1 and EMDX 2 were part of a 4 unit set of SD60 Demonstrators built in 1984, and were tested on a variety of railroads, both on the eastern and western parts of the United States. EMDX 1, 2, and 4, were eventually sold to Conrail, with EMDX 3 being kept on as a test platform before being sold off to GATX. The EMDX SD60s were equipped with Nathan K3L horns.
