It's October 29, 1940, K-36 #485 departs Alamosa at 2:30 AM with 8 loads, 69 empties. K-28 #471 is the helper on the run.

Crew: Conductor McLaughlin; Engineer Turney on the 485; & Engineer Hurley on the 471, with Conductor Ashbrook and crew on the train in the caboose being deadheaded to Chama to "protect stock".

The loads includes 2 Santa Fe branch loads, & 1 gas Antonito

The empties are: 9 empty single decks; 23 empty double decks; 9 empty tanks; 3 empty dumps; 20 empty box 2 idlers & a caboose.

The train rolls through La Jara as it heads south.

At Romeo, the crew sets out a empty beet dump.





The train rolls through a bridge north of Antonito.



Soon, the train pulls into Antonito at 4:25 AM.

After 1 hour 5 minutes setting out cars, placing the helper in the middle of the train, & coal & water, the train departs Antonito at 5:3 AM with 4 loads, 64 empties.







At Lava siding the train had to wait 35 minutes waiting for Chama Extra 483 east & 4 minutes sawing by the eastbound freight (Lava siding has a 26 car capacity).



After the meet & saw by, the train passes the Lava tank.

As the train climbs the hill...



It stops at Big Horn for 35 minutes to let the westbound San Juan by.



After that, the train continues it's way west.



The train rolls through Sublette.

As the grade eases...





... it rolls through Mud Tunnel.

Soon, the train pulls into the siding at Osier to meet Chama Estra 487 east.

After 45 minutes meeting the eastbound freight (X487 east had 34 loads stock & a caboose), the train rolls over Cascade Creek trestle.





The train rolls over the bridge at Los Pinos...



... & passes the tank at Los Pinos.

The train rounds Tanglefoot Curve...



... & pulls into Cumbres at 12:10 PM.

After 35 minutes cutting the helper off the train, setting out 8 empties (to meet the 60 car limit for the 4% grade) & testing the air, the train departs Cumbres at 12:45 PM with 4 loads 56 empties.



The train rounds Windy Point...





... & rolls over the Coxo Crossing.
