Some of you may have seen photos of freight locomotives being substituted as motive power for passenger trains, such as in this photo:
http://www.railroadf...old-help.38611/

However, the braking systems on passenger trains generally use higher brake pipe pressures than freight trains (110 vs 90 PSI). The maximum pressure that the leading locomotive can supply the brake pipe was, in the "classic" era of railroading, controlled by devices called feed valves. Thus when a freight locomotive has to be used on a passenger train, the crew sets the feed valves to a higher pressure. On modern locomotives the brake pipe pressure is set through the locomotive's on board computer screen.

Currently, to allow this type of flexibility in MSTS (and the current version of OR), TWO .eng files are needed for the same locomotive--one with "passenger" braking parameters and one with "freight" braking parameters, which is inconvenient as to making consists in applications like TSRE. The player should be able to adjust the maximum brake pipe pressure in-game, and that way we don't have to have two .eng files for each loco in order to simulate a motive power substitution.

The system is different in different countries / railway systems. Also the idea of choosing different feed valves is just one example of the use of a choice in an eng file.Others might included bi-mode trains, dual voltage locomotives, dual braked locomotives and units with two different sets of gear ratios.I have suggested that a broader way to deal with these would be to allow choice points or switches in eng files that allow the user (or the simulator if in basic control mode or if automated) to select the appropriate values for particular situations. https://trello.com/c...-and-cvf-files#
British examples:
Vacuum braked locos - Braked / Unbraked switch with different timings for brake application and release for fitted and unfitted trainsAir braked locos - Goods / Passenger switch with different timings for goods (air single pipe) and passenger (air twin pipe)Dual braked locos - Vacuum Unbraked / Vacuum Braked / Loco / Air Passenger / Air Goods
