I've filed the bug report. Rev. 55.2 of OR NewYear MG now includes this feature. When no negative feedbacks will arise, I'll add it also to the unstable release.

How do they work with the standard OR version and how do they work with release 55.2?

Stjin,
I have checked this on an articulated locomotive, composed by two trainsets, and it works as it should.

Hi Carlo,
I have to go back to this fix to fine-tune it. I noticed that after connecting the player's locomotive to the AI train or loose consist, the order of individual cars, including the locomotive, will automatically change after saving and reloading the game. The whole consist will turn so that the locomotive will be first in line again. This is OK and the pantograph switch in the locomotive cab is set OK. What is not OK is the raised pantograph on the locomotive model. This is in the reverse order of that indicated by the switch in the cab.
Could you look at it, please?

So I was wrong. It does not cause a connection to the AI train or loose consist, but a reversal point in the player's path. After crossing the reversal point, the player's locomotive reports as flipped. After saving and reloading the game, the pantograph animations will be swapped.
Carlo, can you handle this, please?

I don't know, is there a correlation, but when I start the EMU (TT mode), which had changed direction just before simulation start, the directions of cabview and (more often) headout cameras were swapped. I have to press Ctrl+E twice to fix it. It has only one panto statement, assigned to open doors at both sides, so I can't say about its panto's behavior.

That EMU arrived at terminal, terminated and formed new EMU, going to arrive at opposite direction.
It is inactive for period of time, then started with me as a driver, 1 minute before departure at opposite direction.
So, when loading is complete, it looks like cameras directions, belonged to first train, was simple translated to this second.

The whole problem is that if the locomotive is marked as flipped, the animations of the pantographs are swapped. This happens on all versions of OR.

I have tested and in fact there is the problem. I hope I'm able to solve it. Icik, can you please open a bug report in Launchpad?
