Greetings to All,

I'd like to ask wether the default water textures can be set to shiny texture mode in OpenRails. It'd look good in backlight. In the past, I managed to get this effect by placing water-textured flat shapes with shiny texture, but it's more compliated than just switch all to shiny :)

Thanks: Peter

I have done the same thing in routes, that use a shape file for rivers and lakes by setting the texture mode to high or low shine. It does look impressive, especially when the sun is low in OR.

Thanks

Of course, actual reflective water would be nice, too! I'm sure that's a long way off in OR, however.

In my opinion, better water is the #1 graphics improvement that would help open rails realism.

The water texture in many routes is far too transparent in OR, a fix for that would be Great. :D not sure how easy that would be to fix though.

Transparent water on the sea view route, there's far too much water here to use shapes as an alternative.

Thanks, Mark.

Dig up the .env file(s) for your route and take a look at how they define the water layer. This block of data allows for n numbers of layers of water texture, each separated by some distance you specify, which means you can fiddle around with layers of different semi-transparent textures to get the final appearance you like.

You can even set up seasonal specific appearances.

IIRC I use four texture layers, all transsparent, and I apply different tertex art underneath for different effects. San Francisco Bay:

It will require a fair amount of trial and error... most water textures you can find are from swimming pools and they're showing you the blue paint applied to the bottom of the pool

I had a look inside the env files, they already had five layers for water, I didn't understand them enough to alter them, however, I ran an older version of the sea view route (v2) which were a lot better, so I adapted the env files from v2 to work in v5,(renamed some files to the v5 equivalent, and copied some textures over) the result is not perfect but much better and has eliminated the annoying flicker of the water textures as well.

you can see the improvement here.

Thanks, Mark.
