It's November 6, 1940, K-46 #486 departs Alamosa at 4:50 AM with 19 loads 40 empties; after a short while, the train is seen running down the San Luis Valley to Antonito.

Consist:

Of the 19 loads, one is a stock car loaded with cattle that came from La Veta, & was reloaded at Alamosa & the cattle is bound for Romeo.

Empties: 12 empty double decks; 5 empty single decks; 11 empty tanks Chama; 9 empty box 2 other empties, & a caboose.

At Romeo, the crew does 45 minutes switching, & the train pulls into Antonito at 7:30 AM with 18 loads 41 empties.

After 1 hour 10 minutes switching & letting No. 115 by (which took 15 minutes), x486 west departs Antonito at 8:55 AM with 12 loads 28 empties; after a while, the train passes the tank at Lava.

The train rolls through Big Horn & stops at Sublette.

After the crew had something to eat & put water in the tender (20 minutes overall), the train leaves Sublette & rolls through Mud Tunnel.

The train rolls through Rock Tunnel & goes through Osier.

The train rolls over Cascade Creek trestle, the bridge at Los Pinos, & passes the Los Pinos tank.

After rounding Tanglefoot Curve, the train pulls into Cumbres at 1:45 PM.

After the crew tested the air on the train* (which took 20 minutes), the train departs Cumbres at 2:05 PM; the train rounds Windy Point, & rolls over the crossing at Coxo.


Cumbres has a car inspector house. Westbound trains are required to test the air lines & brakes before descending the hill.
