Here is a simple pack with a startup and a switchoff sound, plus the eng.sms file, for the original SD402 in external view. Not perfect, but it might be used as an example for developments for other locomotives.
Attached File  SD402_extsound.zip (458.68K)

Hello,

Mr. Csantucci would it be possible to add a parameter to the eng file so that the diesel locomotive of player is off when the OR is started? I think, then the start and stop of the diesel engine would be more useful.

I agree that such an option would be desirable (and the same is true for the initial panto state in electric locos). I wonder whether the best place for the parameter is the .eng file or the .srv or .con file.

I would vote for inclusion in .eng file... :)

I think for setting the diesel locomotive state at startup OR is best the eng file.

Did the option to have the diesel startup state set in the eng file come to anything?

Hmmm ? Must be an "Across the pond" thing. All the diesel engines I was ever involved with required going in to the engine compartment and AFTER checking the essentials like oil, water, setting circuit breakers, compressor(s) etc --- THEN one started the engine and did a walk through to check for leaks and such.

Using Train Ops (F9) has a Toggle Power setting. FWIW, I am in the process of changing eng files and activities to engine off when starting.

Remember -- This is a Simulation !

Perhaps someone would developp an procedure for doing a cold start / lightoff for a steamer

Usually on North American diesels, the starting controls are on the back wall of the cab, so it would be visible, though you probably wouldn't need it very much.

Cold-starting a steamer? Three days later...

That's what I was asking - is it even possible to have an activity start with the diesel engine not running? I had the idea it was not possible as yet.

I keep forgetting it's a Simulation. :)

ABSOLUTELY NOT the .eng file. In the real world, locomotives aren't shut down every day unless you're running a shortline. They commonly idle for long periods when not in use, even overnight (albeit at low idle). More often than not, when the van arrives with the crew, the locomotives are running. It will depend entirely on the scenario, which means specifying it at the activity level is the most accurate solution.
