The locomotive I'm building has a cab in the middle with 4 windows in the front and 4 windows in the back. Every window has its own wiper, but never are all 8 wipers switched on simultaneously. Every wiper has its own switch, 2 are moved by hand, if necessary. Is there a way to implement more than one wiper-switch, or are my choices either zero animation, one wiper animated or all 8 of them?

No.., Unfortunately there is no individual wiper controls available. You need to choice from no animation or all animated wipers only. However..., I suggest you to animate all the wipers. It would look good... ^_^

As there are never all wipers used at the same time in reality, I decided to animate 2 wipers at the front windows and 2 at the back. That's quite unrealistic too, because naturally in reality there will wipers only be used in the driving direction, not on the backside. So one must not look back.

Is the loco symmetric in design...?? If yes you can probably reduce the draw call of animating the 4 wipers from 4 draw calls to 12 draw calls by combining two wipers on same axis... :)

Unfortunately it is not symmetric, so no reduction of drawcalls that way. But, to show my illiteracy concerning GPUs, is everything drawn anytime, even if it is out of sight?

AFAIK.., All the scenery in the view sphere is loaded into RAM, however only the scenery visible through camera is processed by GPU... I may be wrong though...

You are not wrong. The process is called back-face culling.

Yes, that function of independently controlling the windscreen wipers (and mirrors) of each of the cabs of a locomotive that has one at each end should be a high priority. There must be some complex reason in the programming of the simulator so that time passes and it is not solved. Let's hope that in the future it will be possible.
