James Ross, our technical lead, has analysed the data that the webserver collects for:

  • downloads of Open Rails - mostly new users
  • checks for the presence of a new version - mostly active users

I found the numbers and the trend for the last 2 years rather surprising.

The "Active users" are the number of checks for updates, made automatically when a user runs Open Rails, during a 28-day period. During each period, multiple checks from the same IP address are counted as only one, so this count is fairly close to the number of active users. Users with dynamic IPs will be over-counted and those who share IPs or use Open Rails without going on-line will be under-counted.

Hi Chris,

Good info - I've been using Monogame pretty exclusively - so some of us fall through the cracks...

Hoping for a new version soon...
:)

Regards,
Scott

Well I guess you clicked the link and saw the trends for both Active Users and Downloads for the past 2 years - both growing strongly.

I found that quite surprising; I didn't realise Open Rails has been growing in popularity. I am wondering if that's because I mostly focus on certain forums on Elvas Tower and fail to see the wider picture.

Confession:

Looked at the quick graphics and saw three "ups" and three "downs"... didn't study the smaller graphs. Way too busy with really important stuff like route butchering at the moment.

:rotfl:

Hi Andre,

I believe Monogame is the game engine ORTS is moving to - replacing XNA... I am seeing substantial performance improvements and better visuals... Just uploaded all the required files to the "beta" lib here for testing you can grab them if you care to try them... I described everything in detail in the upload to avoid hijacking Chris's post...

Bablefish. ;)

"Wait - what - LOL - how is "Ming" even remotely German?"

Well, how is it English??

Farthest back our ancestry was traced led to a dead end in England: David Ming, circa 1600-something.

The German came in from my paternal Grandmother's side: Baughmann (pronounced: BOFF man). One of my Great Granfather's spoke German. Can't remember (or even know?) how to spell his name, but I recall from my Dad that it was pronounced in English as "cloud". So, I got it from the Baughmann and "cloud" ancestry. I also have Cherokee and French and...

Yup, a real American mongrel, I am.

All fer now!

Very thoughtful. Thanks, Scott.

Just looking at the numbers for the Stable version (much larger than the other two), we can see a distinct peak when v1.2 was released in Jan 2017.

I would take care about the detail. Looking just at the Stable Version of Open Rails, which has by far the largest numbers, if there are currently about 1,600 downloads/week, then that's 6,400 in a 28-day period.

I guess all of these will also appear in the count of Active Users, even though they represent newcomers who may not stick with it. That leaves us with over 9,000 Active Users who are sticking with it.

9,000 is a great number and everyone who has contributed in any way to the project can take pride that there are 9,000 other guys using and valuing it.

The growth in these Active Users is also very pleasing - 45% in the last 2 years - so we must be doing something right. There's always room to improve, but just pause for a moment, give yourself a pat on the back and say "Well done".
