I don't download test updates all that often... maybe every 40-50 changes between updates, so I may have missed something somewhere that would have allowed me to avoid this error:

Is this on me? What then do I need to do?

I have not been able to download any of the updates for at least several months. Same error. I gave up on updates, deleted the test version and downloaded new.

There was an earlier thread it has something to do with security certificates. All you have to do is go to the open rails page and download the latest test version. You will have to delete your current copy.

I came across this a couple of weeks ago. The solution was to do a manual download (I chose X4100) and install it manually.

Then you can auto update...

Thanks all, I'll give that a try.

There is no joy in Mudville today.

I went to the OR page and downloaded Openrails-Testing.zip, dated May 6, and dropped its contents into my OR folder over-writing everything. Looking at the folder contents the files are dated today so indeed they did over-write all that was there. When I run OR it says I have V4083 (curious as that's what I had before) and offers an update to V4034. That fails, same message as before.

Did I fail to do a necessary step in this process that has prevented a proper update?

Go to https://james-ross.c...jects/or/builds which has all recent builds in zip format, 4134 is the latest at time of writing.

I am not entirely sure why what you did here didn't work (it seems like it should have), but something to bear in mind for the future: it's a good idea to extract into an empty or new folder, not an existing one, as left-over files can sometimes interfere with the new version.

The problem may well have been with the shortcut on the desktop and/or resident memory. I do not shut down my PC for weeks at a time, nor log off, as I run lots of automated backups in the middle of the night. I noticed the version number had not changed after I had unloaded the archive over the original files, even tho the date stamp for everything was just minutes ago.

Maybe that's exactly what you are advising to watch out for, I dunno. I do use the update mechanism in the OR menu and that has been pretty reliable until this adventure.
