Back in 2009 Bill Pratt gave us several versions of the classic Denver & Rio Grande Western 5500 series stock cars. Bill now offers the modeler 12 new cars in this series.

These 350 Class 5 cars were ordered from the American Car and Foundry Co. by the D&RG in 1903 and delivered in 1904 and 1905. They underwent a minor revision and repair program in 1907, at which time the doors received their unique “double chevron” bracing. They were completely rebuilt in 1926 at which time they were painted black.

Some cars in this class had “double decks” for hauling sheep and hogs, and were identified by the stenciled “double deck” on a slat on the right side of the car before 1940. After 1940 a small superscript D after the car number was used to designate a double deck car. Many lettering styles and arrangements of the upper slats on the car sides evolved as a result of the 1926 rebuild.

With this release we give you double deck and single deck cars in each of four sub types plus two open door cars for a total of 12 new cars. The differences are mainly in the arrangement of the top side boards and location of lettering, both pre and post 1940 when the Flying Rio Grande herald was applied to many of the cars. These 12 cars have been completely redone by Bill with lots of striking new details and yet they function quite well under both MSTS and OR programs. Check out the brake equipment under the cars and the details around the brake wheel ratchet and pawl. Pretty slick.

These cars were modeled from Tomalco plans published in Sloan's “A Century + Ten of D&RGW Narrow Gauge Freight Cars, 1871 to 1981”, and the historical data is from this same publication. Howard Saunders performed file and texture tweaking on the original wagon files, along with the original lettering. Herb Kelsey served as historical assistant and did the Beta testing as well as the screenshots. Packaging and marketing is by Herb Kelsey under license from Pratt Model works. :)

Enjoy!

And of course, an error pops up just as soon as you upload the file. Please replace the d_stock_5535d.wag file in the d_stock_5535d folder with the following:

Attached File  d_stock_5535d.wag (3.81K)
Number of downloads: 7

This will put the double deck in the car. :bigboss:
