It's typical for a K-37 or K-28 (until the early 40's) & the occasional K-36 to take empty gondolas to Crested Butte & bring down loaded cars. But the K-27 has been seen on the branch. On November 18, 1940 K-27 #452 departs Gunnison at 11 AM with 38 empties. Stock has been handled along the branch, and on this day, 7 empty stock cars are included with the 38 empties- 5 for Jacks Cabin & 2 for Crested Butte.

After 3 hours 35 minutes switching, eat, load 2 cars cattle, inspection, & taking on water, the train departs Crested Butte at 4:10 PM with 64 loads, 1 empty.
