After switching and time for the crew to eat, the train departs Silverton at 1:50 PM with 9 loads 4 empties, and soon, rolls through Elk Park.

Silverton is the site of a wye, depot, stock pens, and a yard. The track was extended beyond the depot in the 1950's. The depot was bombed in the 1970's.

Elk Park is the site of a wye, a 14 car siding, and the bridge. The wye had a harp switch stand, but it was removed in the 1970's. The bridge was replaced by a new one in the 1960's.

Consist:

Loads: 2 ore Amarillo, 6 ore Eilers, and the combine.

Empties: 1 empty box, 2 empty coals, and the caboose.

The train takes on water at Needleton, rolls over the bridge at Tefft, and rolls through Tacoma.

Needleton is the site of a 13 car siding, and a water tank. The tank was replaced by a tank car body on a frame in the 70's, but the wooden tank survives today.

Tefft is home to the bridge and a 15 car siding. There was a sawmill there in the 1910's, but little remains.

Tacoma is home to a 18 car siding and the hydroelectric plant. The plant has been there since 1902; the turbines were intended for Washington state, but they (the turbines) were too small and sent to the site, and the name stuck to the location of the plant. There was also a spur, but because of the flood in 1911, it was destroyed, and never replaced.

The train rolls over the High bridge, and traverses the High Line.

This section of the Silverton branch is probably the most scenic on that branch. When the branch was built in 1881-1882, the cost of this part was as much as $1,000 a foot, but it was worth the effort.

The train rolls through Rockwood, and picks up the loaded refer at Hermosa*.

Rockwood is the site of a 24 car siding and a wye. The wye has a stub switch at the tail- the only one remaining.

Hermosa is home to a 13 car siding, and a wooden water tank. The wooden tank was replaced by something similar to Needleton and Tank Creek. Hermosa had a wye at one time, but it was removed.

* the refer was set out on the northbound trip, and it was loaded with something (spuds?)
