Looking at the second pair of shots, I am wondering if the cone is pointed to the rear. If you look at the second shot from OR, something is lighting the trackside on the right of the picture, which is not happening in MSTS.

I can certainly test reversing the direction of the cone.

There is no parameter in the cone of light code for direction. It is hard coded to 'forward', I assume. Looking at the train from the rear, there is no rear facing cone of light. The entire sky is lighter in OR than it is in MSTS, the lighter view you saw on the right (left in the photo below) is some weeds that are lighter than the rest of the foliage.

I have been fiddling with a pair of locos facing same direction trying to get the second loco to light up using the various settings in the lighting document of MSTS Tech Docs. Nothing works, so it seems that Open Rails is coded to only use the lead locomotive ( eng file ) to supply the lights.

The MSTS light code UNIT(0) is light on regardless of where the unit is, so if Open Rail is hard coded to lead unit only, that’s a bug.

In my UP4500 X55
or in my ALvia S-130,
both composite units, the front beam works correctly.
But both loco consists are .wag .eng .wag
The .wag carries the wheels and the .eng, with no wheels, carries the power and the lights.
It seems that OR refuses to put a beam in the second engine.

Regards.

I suppose that whoever wrote this section of code never considered that the cone of light may not be on a lead eng file, just add it to the list of things that still need to be sorted out. Problem is far as I know we are a bit short of code writers atm.

But in my locos the light cone is in the LEAD eng.
And the thing works fine.
In my opinion there is no need to correct the code.

Regards.

I always orient the lights in multi piece locomotives from the unit that the cabview, controls and power are situated in . The coordinates are all based on the centre of that unit . Where is the unit available ?

Very good point about shortage of code writers. I will try to find a workaround.

Thanks
