I renamed a number of tertex.ace files without providing temporary replacement files (e.g., all red), started TSRE, and moved the camera over to where I knew there would be a problem. I was surprised to see what appeared to be a variety of substitutions (I expected either something you provided or the default Terrain.ace to be used). That didn't appear to be the case. No matter. What was a problem was my attempt to put a tertex file on those patches... TSRE aborted. I repeated the test several times with the same results.
May I suggest this: Provide your own "Emergency" tertex file for such situations (I've used a pirates skull and crossbones, the OR team uses a flat gray. Bright red might be good... choose an obvious pattern that's not anything like vegetation, dirt, or stone. Whatever stands out.
It's easy to explain why it appears and easy to see that something is not right.
