It's also inadvisable to use anything SP as indicative of anything "normal" in terms of locomotive maintenance and things (such as exhaust emissions) that derive from the locomotive's general state of well-being. Maintenance was a foreign concept to them.

SP in the last couple of years prior its absorption into the UP did have a lot of poorly maintained locomotives. That said, the AC's in the photo that I posted were about a year old when I photographed them. They were filthy from running as helpers through the unventilated Tennessee Pass tunnel, as well as the dozens of tunnels on the Moffat. The off-idle smoking and flaming caused by the then-new electronic fuel injection system was not confined to the SP, however--it was pretty much "generic" to that whole generation of locomotives until the EFI was recalibrated/redesigned.
