basically open rails will run any and all MSTS content. Go to the open rails website for more info.

I have my setup with stock MSTS everything on one directory and Open Rails only in others. In Open Rails (in the content tab) I specify all such locations. The Open Rails direcotries are slimmed versions of MSTS... dumping everything related to MSTS software and so what is left is all of \global, \sound, \Routes, and \Trains; the rest of MSTS is gone.
I find the old MSTS directory serves mostly as a static library, a lot like an original backup, and everything I do occurs in the OR side of things.

Is MSTS still in development, or is everything now going Open Rails?

Microsoft Train Simulator (MSTS) had not seen active development for many, many years. The last real new thing to happen to it was the development of BIN, which to has not seen any development in many years. 2004 was the last year I believe. Open Rails (OR) is an independent open source effort to continue the legacy of train simulation in the vein of MSTS while maintaining backwards conpatibility of existing assets.
