Have you changed the line in settings.txt

from
imageMapsUrl =

to
imageMapsUrl = http://maps.googleap...ite&key=*******
where **** is your googlemaps/earth key?

I should have thought of this earlier

Ok so my post didn't come out cleanly. On one line you need

imageMapsUrl = http://maps.googleapis.com
/maps/api/staticmap?center={lat},{lon
}&zoom={zoom}&size={res}x{res
}&maptype=satellite&key=******

I have split it up onto 4 lines so hopefully the whole lot will show.

How much time does it take to load the map?
I have tried but it is always waiting.

I don't know what controls how long it takes to get an image, but with a broadband speed of about 1Mbit per second it takes over 3 minutes for me to get one image.

Today I figured out what I was missing.
I used Simple API KEY, but I should first enable Google Static Maps API keys.
It is good to see those nice google images now, I have a fast connection, they load quickly.

Dumb question: Does TSRE fill in all the values for lat, lon, zoom, resX and resY or do I have to do that each time I want an image?

FWIW the Wait time is not >20 minutes so clearly something isn't right. I'm using:
imageMapsUrl = http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?center={lat},{lon}&zoom={zoom}&size={res}x{res}&maptype=satellite&key=deleted in this post for privacy reasons

I don't know where/how the lat/long are decided. All you have to do is go to terrain (F3) in TSRE5, click the "load map" button, then click on the tile you want mapped. Up comes another window, again click "load map", this changes to "wait". After a short time, the map or google image appears, and then "save to disk".

I was going to give a clue as to what the API key should look like, but it is mind bogglingly complicated. Do a google search for
"Google Static Maps API keys"
