5 pix from tonight's test-runs. The Joes keep getting closer. Chuck and I decided to go ahead and hook up the MU cables between the two units, last pic below:

Thanks, Erik. It actually took me some time to set up the shot. And the yard-bull kept giving me the eye

My old oboe teacher would love these pics, if I can find an email address for him I'll have to forward them to him. We would usually chat trains while preparing for and finishing up lessons, being from Montana he was quite a Milwauke fan.

Hey Erik speaking of the Bulls being around every corner, does anyone recognize the new hire as being the guy who would park the tow truck next to the tracks all the time.

Got a link or such...how did these unit get their nicknames? Can you suggest a book that covers "The Road" and the locos?

This stuff just keeps getting better and better!

Well I have no idea about the Pelican but the name Little Joe originated from the fact that the locomotives were originally meant for export to the Soviet Union. When post war politics heated up the locomotives were sold off in country; however, not before Soviet Premiere Josef Stalin leant his name to the locomotives. This was not the first time that politics had halted the of locomotives to Russia the "Russian" Decapods of 1917 or 1918 (can't remember for sure) were sold off to US roads after the Bolshevik revoloution.

Craig,

That's correct about the Joe's moniker. But I have no idea about how the boxcabs got the nickname of Pelicans. I'd like to hear on that too.

There are a few books out on the Milwaukee Road's electrification.

I have only one at my disposal, "Milwaukee Road Under Wire" by Karl Zimmerman. It's out of print, but shows up on ebay quite frequently.

Others that I know about ( and would lov to own ):

There's Noel Howard's book, but I forget the name of it. Sure someone will fill me in on that.

There's a book by Richard Steinhiemer "Electric Way Across the Mountains" out of print, but Signature Press is going for a second printing as we speak.

Morning Sun books "Under Milwaukee Wires"

Charles and Dorothy Woods "Milwaukee Road West" also out of print, shows up on ebay once in a while.

Oh, yes, a link. Here is Todd Jones's site, which has lots of info and more links:

Hi Tim:

Thanks for the rundown. Goin' a-book lookin' now.

You'd think they would have dropped all references to Joseph Stalin given he was a bad guy so to speak. Curious how these things work.
