Hi,

A recent visitor to the Open Rails website downloaded the current version (1.2.3766) and has complained of very low frame rates:

4 - 11 frames/sec

when exploring an Indian route (NFR).

I've attached the OpenRailsLog.txt which shows a CPU with 2GB of RAM and a video card which is Mobile IntelĀ® 965 Express Chipset Family (0.3 GB RAM). I don't know much about hardware, but suspect this is low-performance kit.

I was wondering if the setting:

UseLargeAddressAware = True

might be the culprit since the user has only 2 GB.

Does that sound plausible?

Mobile GPUs typically don't have much grunt, and if that 0.3 GB RAM is correct this is a very limited graphics system. Performance recommendations in probable order of effectiveness:

  • Dynamic shadows = off
  • Distant mountains = off
  • World object density = lower is faster
  • Viewing distance = lower is faster
  • Fast full-screen alt-tab = off
  • Glass on in-game windows = off

Shouldn't be; the option simply allows Open Rails to use up to 4 GB RAM instead of the usual 2 GB RAM limit (only on 64bit or specially-configured 32bit systems). That said, if the route has high detail/lots of scenery, the 2 GB RAM itself could be an issue. Experimental > Load night textures only when needed = on may help this.

I would regard he system as specified is completely unsuitable for Openrails, the minimum system for reasonable performance for reasonably detailed routes such as the SOB or freeware BerninaBahn would be a quad core CPU, 4 gig of ram and a mid level GPU (say an NVidia GTX 680 or AMD 6870) with at least 1 gig of ram, running at least Windows XP sp3.

Note: a system of vastly higher spec than given above is NOT required and from my experience will unlikely produce a great jump in frame rates, Openrails frame currently being limited by only a single thread feeding data to the GPU.

Hi Chris,

More notable is that the cpu is 2Ghz and 2 core.
I suggest that the frame rate is ok for the hardware.

James suggestions are the best that can be expected.

LargeAddressAware has nothing to do with the problem. The system can only use as much ram as it can get.
LAA just instructs the program to use more IF it is available.

cheers
Derek

Thanks very much to all 3 of you.

I'll link to this thread for the visitor to read and also post here any feedback I can get.
