First step:

With this feature MSTS and Kosmos environments will be full integrated into OpenRails. The ability to use multiple cloud layers will be implemented. The use of various definitions and parameters in .env files such as fog levels, wind direction and velocity, precipitation and snow levels, sunrise/sunset, and date-time/season to be implemented. Existing MSTS files are not modified, any additional data need will be stored in OR only files, to be determined.

May the wind fill your sails, code rain down from the gods, and everybody else get outta this man's way and let him work.

Amen to that Gerry. Having been an ORTS convert for a couple of years now, my major gripe has been with the environments/weather. Knowing you're working on it now is terrific news Robert, thanks!

Amen, Beers :drinks:

Mr, Murphey, If I may ask a favor? Since MSTS was very limited in the way the animated water works I would like to know if the idea from OpenBVE could be made to function with the standard MSTS/Kosmos environments? Water at 5:19 mark My link

The moving water in the above X-City South v1.4 video also needs some work, but involves a static canal object with ordinary texture, and then two animated, texture shifted alpha-enabled surfaces overlaid; one moving left to right (to match the cloud’s direction of movement), and the other moving along the Z-axis. When combined, they make the water appear to ripple slightly if you look closely for a few seconds, particularly where the tree reflections are visible on the right.

I personally think if the above could be coded to work with the MSTS standard default water that it would be a nice improvement of the Kuju effect while not going overboard.

This is great news! One feature that I hope can be included is for locomotive smoke to be affected by the wind--i.e., the smoke blowing in the same direction that the wind is blowing. Also, I hope wind direction and velocity will be an environmental feature that can be defined as random, or defined in dynamic weather syntax in the .act. file. Those would be the frosting on the cake.

Interactions with rain on rivers and streams would be cool. The Kosmos environments already do this in a way.

Thank you!

A huge step forward in realism!

I see that Esteban Litwinczuk has filed a bug report:

Hi! In the summer of the southern hemisphere (December to February), sunrise around 5am and sunset around 7pm. In Open Rails, this is not seen, and sinrise around 8am, sunset at 4pm.

Wonder if that comes within your brief?
