I open standard route USA1 with TSRE5 64 bit last .exe. without making any change I save it.
When I try to start that route with Open Rails I get a crash, see attached logfile.

Default routes are out of sync with your global tsection.dat. Editing routes using wrong global tsection.dat will damage route if using TSRE or MSTS RE.
But MSTS RE rewrites local tsection.dat only if you touch dynamic track or place new.
TSRE always rewrites local tsection.dat even if no dynamic track is touched.
If you want to edit these routes using TSRE, set writeTDB = false, or convert route to current global tsection.dat.

Sorry for having raised an already answered question. However in this case maybe how MSTS RE does is friendlier. By the way I wanted to check the modification of a car spawner in order to use an external car spawner list, however using writeTDB = false the .w files aren't modified. I'll try to convert the route.

Yes, MSTS RE behavior is much friendlier. I just forgotten to fix this. It is simple fix, but requires lots of tests if it is done correctly. I prefer to always save TDB to make sure that all changes will be saved and avoid possible .w file and tdb out of sync situations.
Try setting "read only" on route tsection.dat file properties. Maybe it will work.

Interactive items placed with writeTDB = false should be saved in .w file, but it will be broken because it needs TDB data that is not saved.

This sounds like something that TSRE can automatically address and fix. Perhaps after a user confirmation when the first save occurs.
