It's November, 1948. The Chief ( a passenger train on the ATSF ), leaves La Junta at 6:35 AM. The next stop is Trinidad.

Consist:

Power: A-B-B-B-A

Cars: 2 baggage cars ( storage mail ), 1 rpo, 1 baggage-dormitory-lounge, 6 sleepers, 1 dorm-lounge, 1 diner, 2 more sleepers, and a observation car.

The train rolls into Trinidad. Because of the 4% grade, helpers are needed.

Thanks a bunch! And honestly, I can only imagine what that was like back in the day. 5 ATSF F-Units running full tilt to try and counteract those grades.

With the helpers attached at the rear of the train, we see the Chief departing Trinidad at 8 AM as it heads for the next stop: Raton.


The helpers are a pair of ATSF Alco RS1 locomotives.

I like to use a AABA set of E's to get over the pass

After reaching the summit, the helpers were decoupled from the train, and rolled into Raton. The helpers went back to Trinidad.

After departing Raton at 9 AM, the train races to the next stop: Las Vegas, New Mexico.
