This is no way (prototypical or otherwise) to handle FRED. This is what happens when uncoupling FRED and moving train. FRED's a patient device ... so it waits for the next train to pass.

There should be a user option in OR that points to a FRED shape to be used as default for the end of a train. If you uncouple from it, it disappears.
There should also be a keystroke to add it to the players train.

Perhaps under the "content" option would be the place to provide the path to the FRED.

Edit (5-5-2016): I forgot to mention, in the screenshot, the stand-in for FRED is the excellent EOT device courtesy of Tiger Trains.
...and it's good to see everyone having some fun with this topic....but let's face it - Herb is right, FRED is a step down from the caboose...and even though the lord of limericks olfactory sensitivity is finely tuned to FRED, it really doesn't smell that bad.

An automatic attachment of FRED to the end of a train would be more welcome than him just wondering off when he doesn't think he's of any use anymore. I've been know to take FRED off the end of my train, add cars to the end, and put FRED back onto the end of the new last car.

That's exactly what I ended up doing. Did the work in the spur, came out and backed into FRED, coupled and off we went. Would be nice to have FRED auto attach/detach.

This is the part where old-school MSTS, with it's default rolling stock [shutter], made things easier (not necessarily better...just easier) by adding the flashing red light in the lighting section of each WAG file. That way the "FRED" (i.e. the red light that was mysteriously emitted from nowhere) would always be flashing on whichever car happened to be in the end.

...although I do like the idea of uncoupling FRED and having him hover there by himself until the train is reassembled! This is 2016, shouldn't hovering equipment be a reality now? http://www.elvastower.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rofl2.gif

In all seriousness, I do think an "auto-attaching" FRED would be nice in OR.
