File Name: MSTS/ORTS Utility - MSTS_Swap v3.0
File Submitter: slipperman
File Submitted: 23 Feb 2016
File Updated: 18 Jun 2022
File Category: Computer Utilities

Allows one of a selection of utilities to be run against a chosen MSTS or ORTS installation.

Also offers the option to run that installation in Sim or Editors mode, providing it is a valid MSTS installation. This will make it particularly useful to those who have difficulty in setting up the Editors shortcut.

It may also be used with route installations which are only designed for use with Open Rails, ie with no MSTS Registry entries or train.exe, when dummy settings are created.

**** NOTE : If you already have MSTS_Swap installed, I suggest you uninstall it and install v3.0 into the same folder, which will not have been removed.

New in v3.0
Added option to copy the default MSTS installation to a new location - ONLY applies to valid MSTS installations.
Added option to show the folders list in alphanumerical order.

INSTALLATION
Unpack the zip file to a temporary folder.
*** IMPORTANT : before installing, please read the Install_Readme.txt file.

It is recommended that the main Readme, which will be found in the program's installation folder, is fully read before using this program.

The program has been successfully tested but there is no guarantee that it will work correctly in all circumstances and I will not be held responsible for any damage, or loss, caused to any PC, or its data, as a result of using this software. It is recommended that adequate backups are available to cover any unexpected events. It will NOT work under Windows XP due to the use of Net Framework v4.5

correctly, and seamlessly, with the data required by his Support Team.

Many thanks are also due to the countless unknown contributors to numerous C# websites without whom
I would have been lost!

Ged, I still have not been able to get this program working, at least not working enough to recognize route_riter and other utilities.

I'm now trying your latest release on windows 8. MSTS is installed but does not work -- I'm using open rails. I have Route_riter, track viewer (which I assume means open rails track viewer?) and activity changer. I have set route_riter to run as an administrator and started it up. The other two program do not have setting "run as administrator" as an option.

I have two thoughts about what might be the issue:

- Is something wrong my attempt to set route_riter to "run as administrator?" I set this in the comparability tab in properties. Before I did so, I would normally have to enter my administrative password twice. Now I still have to enter it once. I also set swap to run as administrator and I still have to enter the administrative password to run swap. There are a load of other programs that are included in the route_riter package. Thinking one of these might be the issue I set some of them to run as administrator, but it didn't help, but maybe I missed something essential. I have separate user accounts for me and for administrator, as is recommended practice.

- Is it related to the fact I have swap now installed on my "D" drive and route_riter installed on my "C" drive (I have a hard drive an a SSD)?

I'm really not sure where to go with this.

thanks
Christopher

I have not toyed with this program, but I would like to make a suggestion. Run it as Administrator. Doing so should automatically start anything else it starts also as full Administrator, and will save the hassle of multiple elevation confirmation prompts.

Joseph, I am running it as administrator. Thank you. I still get prompts even when running as administrator, which is why I'm wondering if I'm doing it right.

I apologize... I glazed over that point in your original post.

Since the program comes with source code, I had a gander and don't see it manipulating its security token. Though I didn't investigate how it's actually spawning processes... ahh. I don't know the internals of how managed code handles security tokens. (e.g. I'm no C# expert).

Is it only programs/utilities that you've explicitly always set to run as Administrator that show the second elevation prompt?

I think only a few older MSTS type programs do this - most notably, Route Riter.

Hi All,
I have discovered a tiny bug in this program!  Strictly speaking, it's not in the program and it can be easily corrected by the user.

When running MSTS, and with certain graphics card settings, view 1 shows a grid of widely spaced lines; this doesn't show if the Shift+1 view is used.  To remove this grid, the parameter /nofiltercab or /nofiltercab:1 can be used.  The default parameter included in MSTS_Swap is \nofiltercab which, obviously, doesn't work!

If you see these grid lines when running the sim from MSTS_Swap, please amend the \nofiltercab part of the parameter line to be /nofiltercab before pressing the Accept button.  It's only necessary to do this once as the modified value is saved and used on subsequent occasions.  Note that there must be no space between / and nofiltercab.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused :sign_sorry:
Should any further versions of the program be issued, it will include the corrected parameter.

Cheers,
Ged
