Thought this was an interesting site on graphically simulating particle physics. http://nullprogram.c...ebgl-particles/

Yup, that's interesting. They've tailored the solution to a fixed-size canvas, where as we get to have fun in an effectively infinite space (or at least moving window into that space). The current particles do run entirely on the GPU, as it happens, but without any collision support.

So some thoughts on steam effects for steam locomotives I have come up with are as followed.

1. Dynamo steam exhaust
2. Pop off valves
3. Blow downs
4. Better Cylinder cock steam
5. Coal stoker exhaust
6. booster smoke
7. various other appliance smoke
8. steam leaks
9. Air Compressors
10. Water injector

Very hypnotic.

Cheers Bazza.

Some further additions might be:

11. Steam brakes
12. Large ejector leak / exhaust / drain
13. Small ejector leak / exhaust / drain
14. Steam sanding
15. Steam reverser
16. Blower

In addition to steam particles OR should also try to model the behaviour of water particles.

This would be useful for filling tenders and for tender overflow.

At present TenderWaterOverflowFX The splashing and spilling water is behaving like steam - it is drifting upwards - very noticeable if you go over a trough slowly. This is okay for WaterScoopFX as the fine spray from this looks good like the photographs and videos. However it is not good for the more liquid water that comes out from TenderWaterOverflowFX. Overflowing water that is moving downwards needs to run or gush downwards (with some bounce or splash if it hits the ground). For faster moving trains where the water is forced out through the water filler then this needs to go up in the air and down again in a parabolic or projectile fashion like a fountain.

The same might also be used for water dripping from water hoses on water towers, or the dribble of water running from injector drains.

I agree that this would be a nice feature, but the particle generation code is a bit out of my league.

If another developer is able to look at this, or suggest some easy changes, then perhaps water flow can be more realistically modeled.

Thanks

Hey Peter, Thank you so much for still working on this. I have currently been putting Open Rails on the back burner this summer but as winter hits I should be getting back into it. I am still willing to help you out if you would like and I am going to try and convert a few more steam locomotives to Open Rails physics for you so we can do some testing. My Milwaukee Road 261 steam locomotive is dead on when it comes to performance in Open Rails and is the most accurate locomotive I have so far when it comes to comparing it to the real locomotives performance.
