Basically, everything that falls "into" / "below" the "bit rating" of the Operating System can run on that OS.

Technically, that means...

  • a 32-bit OS can only run 32-bit software.
  • a 64-bit OS can run both 32- and 4-bit software.

Cheers, Markus

Another difference between 32- and 64-bit Windows, besides available memory, is that 32-bit includes a DOS subsystem so your older stuff (16-bit software) will work. That's not supported in 64-bit.

As for MSTS, it's been advisable to install it outside of Program Files since Vista if not before. I did it in XP as well, because Program Files folders were heavily (though not as much as now) restricted even back then. Starting in Win7, I put everything related to the train sim(s) in the separate folder as a matter of principle, and RR has worked fine as long as the RR Java classes are copied to the Java program folder (must be moved each time there's a Java update).

If you have a 64-bit system that uses both 32- and 64-bit software, you probably need to make sure that you have both flavors of Java installed. The bitness of a program using Java has to match the bitness of Java (hey, new term!). That said, I've found lately that I have to have the RR classes in both flavors of Java - no idea why, since RR is 32-bit software and shouldn't be trying to use 64-bit Java, but that's the way it is.

Thanks guys! That "one way street" aspect always threw me.

Well, I installed RR as instructed, and used a Java install from the link provided in previous posts, but in both regular and administrator run modes I still get error 380 and the program window still buries itself in the bottom of the screen with a broken quit button. :wtf01:

Did you copy all the stuff from the TSUtils folder to a class file in your root java install?

Oh! That could be it. :pleasantry:

Now, I have a Java folder in both the regular and x86 program folders. Do I need to move the files to both folders? Also, exactly how do I do that? :pardon: Do I create a folder named "class" and dump the files inside?

Sorry, my non-computer-technical ignorance is showing... :sweatingbullets:

Create a "class" folder inside the 32 bit Java folder and copy the TSutils contents to it.

Erm... which one is the 32 bit version? They both look exactly the same. :ermm:

Pardon my ignorance... :pardon:

It's the one in the Program Files (x86) folder.

We'll get there, no problems.
