When running the demonstration activity testweather.act, I found that this file also includes a test of the ORTS ability (ORTSActSoundFile) to play a sound file at a particular location. However, I do not have the particular sound file required installed.
When the train reached the location for the sound, ORTS crashed with "Error: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: ", etc.
IIRC, OR should not crash on a missing sound file, but simply report it in the log. Is this behavior related to the ORTSActSoundFile() option in an activity?
Cheers,

Hi Sid,
From your log :

Quote

Error: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not find file 'E:\Program Files 2\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\ROUTES\JAPAN1\SOUND\CabSound.sms'.
I see no mention of missing .wav files in the log?
It looks like a CAbsound.sms file is missing, not some wav file.
A missing *.wav would, IIRC, be ignored. Not so with a missing *.sms file.
regards,
vince

A missing sms file should not crash OR, it should be a warning. MSTS issued a warning if the cab sms file was missing. You could drive, but only heard the track sounds.

Thanks.
I look like my recollection was wrong. I stand corrected.
I could've sworn that there was a sound problem that crashed MSTS I had a problem with but it was long ago.
Sorry for the mis-information.
best,
vince

Thanks Vince,
I had not noticed that the file name specified in the .act file was an .sms file! There is an error in the .act file - the ORTSActSoundfile specification calls for a .wav file.
So it is not a bug, but a user error.
Cheers,

Sid,
Neither the demonstration activity testweather.act nor ...\Train Simulator\ROUTES\JAPAN1\SOUND\CabSound.sms are default files. So you have an "add-on" that is either incomplete or was not installed correctly.

Have you tried to make a copy of one of the other SMS files in \Train Simulator\ROUTES\JAPAN1\SOUND\ folder and rename it CabSound.sms and see what happens?

Where is this "demonstration activity testweather.act" available at?

Sid, I'm sorry. The fact is that I built my demo activity for weather change upon a preceding test activity to play sounds linked to activity events. These test activity events include both .wav files and .sms files. While the .wav files are documented and supported, the .sms aren't documented and supported (even if in general they work), and therefore cause the crash. So if I would have published a correctly written demo activity, there was no crash.

And if a .sms file recalled in and .eng is missing I just found out that there is no crash.

Hi Charles - See Carlo's reply above- I got the .act file direct from Carlo to test the weather since my .apk copy seemed to be contaminated, and this file turned out to have some left over experimental data in it.
As I see it, my initial post should be a "non-event" !
Thanks to all,
