Last year, I was making one of my weekly pilgrimages to the Centralia/Chehalis area to try and catch the Western Washington Railroad (WWR) SW1200 #23 in action.
Although I was let down in this area, fortune rewarded me in the form of an ex-SP bay window caboose that had obviously seen better days.

And yesterday, I was especially surprised to find an old, rusty, graffiti-covered Northern Pacific baggage car on a siding not far from where the caboose was (Despite its condition, it was still possible to make out the lettering and logo on the car as well as markings on the data sheet showing that the car had survived all the way to the BN era!).

I saw this earlier this year, in fact it was the day before my model railroad club's first model train show.

This was by far the most unusual catch I've ever made. Not only did I see this, but there were two others sitting nearby, but they were sitting in the shadows, and they were coupled up behind a BNSF SD40-2.

However, this is probably the rarest catch I've ever caught:

Yes, this is in Galesburg.

Please enlighten me? Is it the combo of the two lead locos? The black loco's logo is unfamiliar to me.

Cheers Bazza.

It looks to me like Penn Central´s "mating worms". With the last figure of the black loco´s number looking like a 3, and the overall loco´s outline, this could be NS #1073, AKA the PC Heritage Unit:

Is that the same Centralia that is famous for being abandoned due to an eternally raging fire in the mines making the entire town a ghost town? It is said the fires there will continue burning for hundreds of years due to it being filled with deep pockets of coal to last a very long time.

That would be Centralia Washington I was referring to, not Centralia Illinois.
It's about 25 minutes South of Rochester where I live, so it makes for numerous and easy railfanning trips.

And how an SP bay window caboose ended up here is beyond me. :unknw:

Not only that, but as I can attest, Matt is probably the biggest Penn Central fan in Illinois.

It's strange to see cars dating from the 60's or earlier still rusting on sidings here and there, literally forgotten by anyone around...i'd have guessed that if a railroad still owned the tracks it would have had them removed, and if someone else owned them they would have been dismantled...heck, how can you forget something as big as a rail car :p?
