Hello and good night all.

Today I was playing with a steam engine after that many times without driving one when all of the sudden I ran out of water on my tender and boiler (after some minutes of driving)...

The locomotive used is Carles Romero's 242F "Confederacion", wich you will find under this link:
http://www.trensim.c...act=view&id=664

The question is, which parameters do I have to modify to solve this "bug" so I won't run out of water that easily?

This is the eng from the engine, anything wrong at all on it?

:whistling:

Greetings Guillermo,

Does the problem happen in MSTS?

Which version of OR is the problem? [Please give the OR version number when reporting bugs / problems.]

Regards Bazza.

This is an impressive engine.

It appears that even under normal operation it was a "water guzzler:.

"With these locomotives there was some concern about water supply. The capacity of the tender was limited at only 6,200 imperial gallons (28,000 litres) and, with few watering points in service, the full capacity of the locomotive was not always used for fear of running short of this essential commodity in the semi-arid Spanish landscape. For example, for the 163 kilometres (101 miles) stretch between Medina del Campo and Burgos that rises 131 metres (430 feet) with an uphill start, three intermediate stops, one slack and some shunting movements to couple extra coaches to the train, the amount of water consumed was about 7,300 imperial gallons (33,000 litres)"

Also another "discrepancy" is in the ENG file, where the cylinder dia and stroke appear to be higher then the normal specifications of the locomotive. I think that they are supposed to be 0.64m x 0.71m. Any idea why the eng file has higher values then these? This might also impact upon steam consumption (hence water and coal consumption).

Can you provide me with a link to the locomotive specifications (preferably in English)? - EDIT - Don't worry about this for the time being, as I found some info in the readme

Cheers

Peter

Hello all, version is 2691. It happens in OR, not MSTS, in MSTS it used to work fine for me atleast. I knew about the need of bigger tenders in real life, but damn, this happened after running for about 30 min... xD

You need something else?

Thanks ppl! :)

Many NA steam ENG files had cylinder & stroke spec that were 2x actual. This was recommended in Bill Hobbs' Excel spec sheet to make water consumption in MSTS more accurate.

Thanks for the feedback.

This highlights the difficulty of maintaining full compatibility between OR and MSTS.

The cylinder specs will impact both calculation of tractive effort, and the subsequent water and coal usage.

So if MSTS required then to be set @ 2x, then this will approximately double these two factors in OR.

Another thing that I noticed was that the boiler pressure seemed to be high in the ENG file compared to loco specifications. Perhaps a conversion error?

I have also noticed a problem initialising the superheater heating area in OR for "MSTS" locomotives. I will need to look at it.

It might be worth it as a test, to set up an "OR" Eng file.

See this site for some info on how to do it.

Cheers

I don't believe that MSTS used cylinder specs to calculate tractive force, so putting out-of-prototype specs only impacted fuel & water consumption. It would be wonderful if someone from the OR team would develop a simple tool (like this spreadsheet which I'm sure Bill would assist in updating) that took prototype parameters and correctly created the OR ones.

Having done many miles testing the OR steam code, I am fairly confident that water usage is fairly close to prototype if real world dimensions are used in the eng file. Unlike MSTS, OR has a fuel calorific line in the eng file which will define how far an engine can travel with a tender/bunker of fuel and again, this is pretty close to real when compared to official test figures. As always, the amount used will depend on how heavy the engineer is with the controls as well.

For dimensions to put into the eng file I look for sites like http://orion.math.ia...erm/slindex.htm or trawl through books.

The current version of OR does most, if not all the calculations that the spreadsheets did.

For example, I have attached the basic steam specifications for the above locomotive (from the locomotive help file).

And below is an excerpt from an ENG file for a superheated locomotive that OR currently uses to specify the locomotive. This shows the parameters required for steam production, use and force generation. This template is available from a Open Rails Test Environment site that has been created to assist in testing locomotive performance. See the examples page.

Most of these key parameters are generally readily available on the Internet with a bit of searching.

Thanks all for your replies, I'm new on steam parameters, so I'll try my best in modifying the Confederacion.

Thanks again m8s!
