Hey folks,
Sorry if this isn't the right spot to post this, but have a question..
How hard would it be to add bump maps to OR?? I think it'd be a good way to add details to a model without have to raise the poly count so high.
Just a thought I had :sign_rockon:

It has been done in MSTS, but how you set this up so it's processed using the MSTS utilities is the secret, I guess.

Not really a secret. Just like Glossmapping, it has to be done in the uncompressed completed .s file.
I've done it with glossmapping, with Paul Gausden's help, but to be honest, I wouldn't want to do it again...

Yeah, I tried Paul's instructions years ago, but it never worked for me, so I probably fluffed editing a step. Thankfully, the locos I model are not 'glossy', but grungy.

I am pretty sure this is not supported in Open Rails.....so for MSTS only.

Paul did warn that glossmapping had a downside - it's ''additive, therefore it glows at night, so okay if you're modelling the ''Ghost Train''.

I still think it'd be a great thing to have. I like to model a lot of the details, BUT, for say these doors and latches, the bump map could do them just as well I think and save ALOT on the poly count.

Not sure how the bump would work for vents I would imagine you could make them look just as good or better than modeled parts

I went a little over board with these I reckon, they're around 70k on polys, but they run fine(50-60frs) in OR on my old puter, but they won't show in the MSTS Activity Editor

The default AE 2d consist viewer is quite primitive and won't display some complex 3d model's 2d avatars without distortion, or not at all, but as long as the underlying blue line [represents continuity of the consist's train brakeline] is showing the consist should exist & load ok.
