You might want to check the exhaust parameters in the BLW files, especially if they are Alco locos. Alcos prototypically tended to smoke profusely, especially on throttle-up, so the exhaust parameters were probably set quite high by BLW to achieve that effect in MSTS. They may be overkill in OR with the new exhaust rendering.

Walter,

Please read what I just posted over in the Discussion section. Yes, the smoke parameters in the X1955 build are a bit excessive, I think.

It depends how absurd the values in the locomotive are; it could be a miscalculation in OR, though at this stage I think people have simply used values well beyond the limits MSTS set. One option is to incorporate similar limits in the MSTS-related bits of OR.

I´ve done some research on my own on which DieselSmoke parameters will give good results, since a program to set up good smoke seems to be quite required.

While I´m preparing the program to update locos without having to manually edit them (should be ready for next week), here are some settings that will produce smoke suitable for modern (IE, locos smoking little, not specific to any era or model) Diesels:

DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude (0.25)
DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude (5)
DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate (1)
DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate (5)

Use that with a nozzle width (last parameter of the Exhaust1 (or other number) section) of between 0.2 and 0.3.

Cheers, Markus

PS: A "more smoke" (IE older loco) set up will also be provided. This, however, needs to be researched first.

Hi,

Here is what I obtain with the DB BR078 by GermanRailroads, without changing any of the parameters. Not bad at all!
On most diesel engines, I personnally replace the default black color by a dark grey. But this may not fit for US engines.

Here´s some figures, that for me sit well for an older engine, that produces more smoke:

DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude (0.25)
DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude (5)
DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate (2)
DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate (10)

BTW, I also updated the figures in my above post, and in the end I will use this data in my program. Anyway, it would be cool if a few people could try it and say what they think, or provide enhancements. I am not going to do anything on my program today anymore, since I gotta do some work for school too...

Cheers, markus

I´ll add some (now indeed refined once again) settings that look good with the light DieselSmoke texture available (hopefully still) from 3DTrains' website for free:

DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude (0.25) comment(little smoke)
DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude (7.5)
DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate (1)
DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate (2.5)

DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude (0.25) comment(lots of smoke)
DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude (7.5)
DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate (1.5)
DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate (10)

Finally, I´m totally happy with these and will try to get the update util done soon.

Cheers, Markus

PS: Recommended RPM change rates (I´m not sure if the program will be able to do these too) are, according to railguy in another post, about 17 for 4-cyle and 25 for 2-cycle engines.

Those are pulled directly out of the MSTS .eng file. Setting them there will change them in OR.

I know that. But seeing that most RPM change rates are FAR too high by "default" (IE, by what you get when simply installing a downloaded loco unchanged), I don´t think this would be too much of a problem. In the end everybody will have to decide on their own.

Cheers, Markus
