Locos begin with full tanks and so have enough coal or diesel fuel for many hours. Steam locos, though, can only go 100 miles or so on a tender of water and need refilling frequently.

In v1911, I've extended the "T" key to refill with water, coal, or diesel oil while the loco or tender is alongside the "pickup" point. Refilliing is no longer instant - you have to keep the T key pressed. If you are not close to the pickup point, then OR reports the distance away instead.

There are some limitations - if your loco or tender has not been modelled with intake points, then refilling is not available.

Still to be implemented:

  • allowing for the position of the intake on the wagon/loco.
  • allowing for the rate at which the pickup can supply.
  • refilling any but the first loco in the player's train.
  • refilling AI trains.
  • animation, e.g. of water columns.
  • starting activities with tanks that are not full.

Please give it a try, but bear in mind that locos start with their tanks full so, after arriving alongside a pickup point, you may find the tank doesn't need filling.

Will it also (once) be possible in OpR to have locos not start out with only a full tank?

Cheers, markus

I can now see a use for the EngineVariables line that MSTS uses or something similar. It is where a lower than normal figure for any of 10 items can be set, coal and water being two in the steam version. The initial diesel level can be set in the diesel eng file as well. The activity maker can supply a modified eng file with a unique name that does not overwrite the original.

Will pickup from water troughs also be implemented?

Yes, I'm sure it will be added - (might be a suitable tutorial task for a new developer?).

Non-full tanks would give us lots of useful scenarios, such as refilling the loco before doing anything else, or trying to economise on fuel or water in order to reach the next supply point.

It should work already but using the "T" key instead of the "Y" key.

I don't have a track with a water trough to test it but, if you do, please try it out and post the outcome.

Setting levels of water, coal, diesel etc. in the ENG fie seems a little odd. Is that what you mean?

I would expect the levels to be set in the ACT file and, if not set, then to be full by default.

In MSTS I have found that I can Shift+T to keep refilling without holding the button. Is this/will this be available on OR?

Bob :rofl2:

I believe that OR recognizes the fuel level set in the .act file.

E.g.

FuelWater ( 20 )

Yes, OR reads it but does nothing with it yet.
