So far with an ATI radeon graphics card I have not been able to run MSTS although Open Rails is fine. I am thinking of swapping in an Nvidia based video card.

I have an AMD Radeon HD 7660G, and I have the same issue.

Phil, I have a Radeon card, the issue isn't with the card, nor even the drivers: It's the install.

I installed Win 7 Ultimate, installed Catalyst drivers: No MSTS joy.

Uninstalled Catalyst, used ATI driver cleaner, started over installed Catalyst drivers. No MSTS joy.

Uninstalled Catalyst, used different driver cleaner, installed Catalyst drives, MSTS purrs like a Chessie Kitten.

Same experience with daughter's Windows 8 laptop. Only had to reinstall once.

It's a "known" issue with ATI's as usual buggy install system. The best recommendation I've seen to avoid it is to not allow Windows to install it's "default" drivers off the Win disk when installing. That's not exactly easy...

Robert

I'm having so many video problems right now w/an ATI chipset* I'm ready to go buy one w/ an nVidia chipset if that'll fix things.

* When I boot I will either get a perfectly stable PC or one where the ATI video card blinks to black every 2-6 seconds. I've no idea why I get one result vs. the other. In safe mode, which I believe is w/o ATI drivers, it's stable. In "normal" mode I've no idea what to expect.

What you can try is disabling and re-enabling the Catalyst Control Center in your Windows System Configuration – startup menu to see if that affects the issue.

Over the years since ATI/AMD video card drivers became dependent on .Net you will normally get a slight delay with the CCC startup when you first boot into Windows.

You do have Microsoft .NET4 Framework installed right?

I have successfully reloaded Windows XP on a clean harddrive. I called their 800 number to activate, so I never had to connect to the internet. My computer treated it as a "reload" of the operating system that I already had registered, so it should operate without further problems.

Besides, I have recently found out that Windows 8 is a disaster and may have to be recalled or completely rewritten.

Just curious, where did you read/hear about that?

I have ran MSTS on Windows 8, and wont let me play on it. I suggest using Open Rails because it works with the game.

Well, I guess after reading all this, I will never get a computer with the Windows 8 operating system.

I have tried, but it didn't work each time. I suggest using Openrails. It works well with me.
