More of Andre's Distant, uh Memories...
The fog out at the 2000 meter standard tile visibility limit has the purpose of obscuring the abrupt ending of the Universe out there. If you have Distant Mountains, the fog in that region transitioning from std tile terrain mesh to DM terrain mesh is totally undesirable, so the Mountains toggle in the TRK file takes it away. In the early days we knew little about DM's, and most folks were not even aware that a couple of default routes had them. Those that were aware wondered why we were given no ability to generate them in the RE.
With the upgrade of DEMEX from v0.6 to v1.0 in February 2002, we could finally get at DM's if we registered. I did on 20 Feb 2002. :bigboss: A few folks began to wonder why TRK files were given a new date and tilestamp when DM's were generated. This was easily traced to flipping the Mountains toggle. I cannot remember exactly when, but a little bit later somebody wondered what would happen if you flipped the toggle in a route that had no DM's. And that's was it; the 2000 m fog lifts. So at least a few route builder types have been aware of this one for over a decade...
