346 was built by Baldwin in 1881 as D&RG number 406, and was one of a group of 12 identical class 70 locomotives. At the time, the class 70 locomotives were the heaviest power on the D&RG, and remained so until the arrival of the K-27 locomotives in 1903.

After the arrival of the K-27s 406 was assigned to Durango as a switch engine, and while there she received automatic couplers and her brake system was changed from straight air to automatic. In 1914 her wrought iron boiler was replaced with one of carbon steel, her smokebox was enlarged, she received a straight stack, and was equipped with an electric headlight.

In 1921 the D&RG changed it's name to the D&RGW and three years later renumbered it's locomotives and changed their classification. The class 70 406 now became class C-19 (Consolidation 19,000 pounds tractive effort) number 346.

In 1936, 346 and two other C-19s were leased to the Colorado and Southern Railway. While in that service she derailed coming down Kenosha Pass and rolled onto her left side She was rebuilt by the C&S, and because her wooden cab was demolished in the rollover she received her distinctive new steel cab. On April, 1937 she pulled the last revenue stock train before the C&S was abandoned and was then returned to the D&RGW. In 1947 she was sold to the Montizuma Lumber Co and worked there until the company's lumber mill caught fire and burned to the ground, at which time she became the property of a scrap dealer.

In 1950 Robert Richardson, owner of the Narrow Gauge Motel at Alamosa, bought 346 from the scrap dealer for $800 and placed her on display at his motel. In 1958 Richardson and Cornelius Huck established the Colorado RR Museum at Golden and 346 was moved there.

At the museum a group of volunteers overhauled 346, and on July 1962 a fire was built in the firebox and had she soon had steam pressure for the first time in 14 years. In 2001, after many years of providing “steam operation” at the museum, she was trucked to the Strasburg Railroad shop for a complete rebuild, and she is now once again providing “steam operation” to the delight of the museum visitors, both young and old.

This model is configured as 346 was in the mid 1930s, when she was still with the D&RGW and before her wreck and subsequent rebuilding by the Colorado and Southern. It was built from plans from Ken Pruitt and Harry Sherman, from two “measuring and picture taking” visits to 346 at the Colo. RR Museum, and from measurements and pictures taken by Herb Kelsy. Additional detail was obtained from pictures of #41 and #340 at Knotts Berry Farm. Most historical data is from The Colorado Railroad Museum's publication ”Locomotive 346 Rebirth for the 21st Century”.

It was built by my usual team of four people. Howard Saunders did most of the initial physics, file and texture adjustment, and testing; Herb Kelsey was a constant source of technical data and pictures, and did file adjustments and extensive testing; Tom Werb, supplied the customized crew and did much final testing; and I built the model and swept the shop floor. It was built using 3D Canvas (now 3D Crafter), which I recommend highly.

To install, unzip the attached file to your desktop, or the temporary location of your choice.  This will produce a folder named “TRAINS.”  Open your Train Simulator folder where your TRAINS folder is located and drag the new “TRAINS” folder into the Train Simulator folder.  When it asks you if you wish to overwrite files, select “Yes to all.”

I hope you enjoy running her as much as I did building her, Bill

Is this engine compatible with Trainz 2010?
