The 1700-1789 group of cars was built in 1921 by the Pacific Car and Foundry Co.in Renton, WA. These were the first as-built steel underframe cars on the NP. A pair of 12-inch steel channels formed the center sill, and castings were used for the car bolsters and buffers. The carbody was all wood construction. The 1700's originally had K-type air brakes, but were later updated in the 1950's with AB-type brakes. Cast-steel truck sideframes were used for the first time on these buggies. Total cost for each car was $4,614.61 in 1921.
