100 34' Class 6 stock cars were built by the D&RGW in 1923. They were 34', instead of the normal 30', so two that stacks of 16' lumber could be carried when not hauling livestock..This turned out to not be as good as first thought, because livestock loading facilities had their loading ramps spaced 30' apart so only one 34' car could a multiple ramp facility at a time.
Besides being longer, these cars differed from the class 5 stock cars by having cast frame 4' 8” Andrews trucks instead of the normal 3' 7”arch bar trucks. These cars are very rare today. 5995 (this model) is being rebuilt by the Friends of the C&T at Antonito, CO and only three others are rumored to exist.
This car was modeled from plans published in Sloan's “A Century + Ten of D&RGW Narrow Gauge Freight Cars, 1871 to 1981”, and the historical data is from this same publication. Howard Saunders performed file and texture tweaking, all lettering, and initial testing. Herb Kelsey performed additional testing, and Tom Werb performed the final Beta testing. The screen shot is courtesy of Howard Saunders.
